DEFINING
OF CASE STUDY
A case
study is what you call a case, a term case study is defined in various
ways, and it is probably easier to say what a case study is not rather than
what it is. A case study should not be equated with observational studies as
this would rule out historical case studies, that case studies are not simply
pre-experimental, and that case study is not a term for a standard
methodological package. Adelmen, Jenskins, and Kemmis (1976).
Although case studies have often been used
to sensitized researchers to significant variables subsequently manipulated or
controlled in experimental design that is note their only role. To understanding
generated by case study are significant in their own right. It is tempting to
argue the accumulation of the case studies allow theory building via tentative
hypothesis culled from the accumulation of single instances. But the
generalization of produced in the case study are no less legitimate when about
the instance, rather than the class from which the instance is draw. (Adelman,1976:
140).
A typology of the case study are; Neo-ethnographic:
The in-depth investigation of a single case by a participant observer; Evaluative:
An investigation carried out in order to evaluate policy or practice; Multi-site
: A study carried out by several researchers on more than one site; Action
: An investigation carried out by a classroom practitioner in his or her
professional context.
There are six principal advantages of
adopting the case study as a method of research, Contrast with other research methods, who will be identify with the issues and
concerns raised; Claim that one can generalize from a case, either about an
instance or from an instance to class; Strength of the case study is that it
can represent a multiplicity points of view and can offer support to
alternative interpretations; Case studies can also provide a database of
materials which may be reinterpreted by future researchers; The insight yielded
by case studies can be put to immediate use for a variety of purposes,
including staff development, within institution feedback, formative evaluation
and policy making; Case study data are
usually more accessible than conventional research report, and therefore
capable of serving multiple audiences.
Adelman et al, suggest that case study
research may be initiated in one of two says. The first of these, an issues or
hypothesis is proposed, an instance draw from the class is selected a studied
and the second, a case in selected a studied in its own right (rather than as
exemplar of a class).
RELIABILITY
AND VALIDITY OF CASE STUDY RESEARCH
Validity is the precision when measuring
that is measured. Validity refers to how well the test measures what should be
measured. There are many types of validity and some of them are face validity,
construct validity, criterion related validity and content validity.
Reliability is the stability and consistency
of repeated measurement results over time. Reliability is often referred to as
“steady-state power” and reliability. The types of reliability include :
test-retest reliability, inter-rater or inter-observer reliability and internal
consistency reliability.
Yin (1984) Reliability and validity
are just as important for case study research. He suggested that four critical
tests confront the case study researcher. These are: Construct validity
(establishing correct operational measures for the concepts being studied); Internal
validity (establishing a
causal relationship, whereby certain conditions are shown to lead to other
conditions, as distinguished from spurious relationship); External validity
(establishing the domain or population to which a study’s findings can be
generalized); Reliability (demonstrating that the study can be replicated
with similar results).
There are two points of
view on the issues of validity are One
the one hand, there are researchers who feel that, while internal validity is
important, external validity may be irrelevant; One the other hand, other
researchers take a different view, arguing that tests of validity should be as
stringently applied to the case study as to any other type of research.
SINGLE
CASE RESEARCH
Single case research
represents a special type of case study. Single case research is similar to
experimental researcher in that some type of intervention usually occurs, that
is the researcher generally does something to the subject being investigated,
and measures what happens as a result.
Single
case research is
similar to experimental research in that some something to the subject being
investigated, and measures what happens as a result, the difference lies in the
subject where in a single case research involving one individual or group. In a
single case research, the behavior of the subject or subject is measured at two
or more time points. One method of embodiment of a behavioral approach, which
prioritizes to change the behavior is single case design. Single case design is
a research design to evaluate the effect of an intervention on a single case in
which the subject under study is used as its own control. A single case design
is required and should be done a baseline measurement of some aspects of the
subject's behavior for some time before treatment. Baseline serves as a
benchmark for assessing the effectiveness of a treatment. In Indonesia the use
of single case design is often used in the field of psychology and education as
the embodiment of the behavioral approach of the subject. In
education, studies have been carried out to alter the classroom behavior of
children who are disruptive or who have specific learning or attitudinal
problems.

Case study is a form of research on a particular phenomenon or an object intensively, broadly, and integrated. Function of this research is to understand the object under investigation in depth and specifically as a "case".

I'm Nur Oktavia Anugrah Asgaf from the third group also, would like to give you more explanation and sorry because our group make a simple explanation about the material because we think that it is the point of this material. About study case i just want give little additional. For your information Case studies include: (1) the objectives of the research can be human, events, background, and documents; (2) the goals are examined in depth as a totality according to their respective background or context in order to understand the various links between the variables.

First, case study is a detailed study by a researcher about a person or a unit over a period of time. This research is done intensively, detailed and deeply against a particular (individual), institution or symptom with a narrow area or subject. Usually case study research involve researchers in deeper investigation and thorough examination of an individual's behavior. In addition researchers will also pay attention to how the behavior of individuals who experience changes because of adjusting and reacting to the environment. researchers will find and identify all the important variables that have contributed to the history or development of the subject including past experiences and the subject environment. Sometimes, case studies involve researchers with the smallest social units such as associations, families, schools, or adolescent groups.
Second, Case study research is aimed specifically at explaining and understanding the object specifically as a 'case'. This research is not just to explain what the object is being studied, but to explain how it exists and why it can occur. In other words, case study research is not simply answering research questions about what the object is, but more thoroughly and comprehensively is about “how” and “why” the object occurs and can be viewed as a case.
The example of this research; Researchers want to know the implementation of extracurricular activities in a school. With a variety of considerations ultimately researchers collect and process data. then the researchers get the conclusion about how and what.What is the background and how the history.

HapusI am Desy Harfani Hakim from PBI 4. For Meldayanti, I am sorry for making you confuse in our statetment. We wanna explain it more clearly. We mean, a case study research is a research that the researchers should try to verify the unit or individual in depth. The researcher must be sincere and continuous in doing the research to obtain optimal results; the researcher also must elaborate to the small part (very detailed). The research must be done Intensively, detailly, and deeply because the researcher is not only just answering ‘what’ but also ‘how’.

1. what is your own explanation about the research of case study? explain the function of its research and give an example about the research of case study!
Case of study is a method for studying the state and the progress of the individual in depth with the aim of helping the individual achieve better adjustment. In addition, case of study is a method of collecting data that is intergrative and comprehensive. Intergrative means curing various approach techniques, and comprehensive means the data collected covers all aspects of the individual person completely.
The function of case of study are:
a. used to solve difficult and complexs problems.
b. to recognize the troubled of individual’s cicumtances,
c. to interpret and diagnose individual behavioral according to the case,
d. to provide a way out of to the problems facing the individual.
For instance: In single research of case study.
Researcher: Teacher of guidance and counseling (female)
Subject: A Student (female)
A teacher observes a student that her behavior has changed from previously “dilligent” and become “lazy”. The teacher wants to find out the cause of her student’s problem. So, she interviewes her sudent in depth to get more information about the factors causing the changed. From the interview results, teacher concludes to provide special treatment so that student achieves better adjustment. In conclusion, the teacher of guidance and counseling as a researcher try to help or guiding the student to solve her problems.

HapusHi salmawati, thanks for your questions. I want to answer it more clearly as long as i know. Your question's about the second function of case study is "to recognize the troubled of individual’s cicumtances", it means that the researcher try to help the people who has problems (problematic person). For example, a student who has no confident to share their problem to other people, it happens from many factors. The researcher knows it when he or she gain the information about student in depth. then he or she knows that the student has a complex problem so he or she tries to answer the question 'what' and 'how' about it.

3. An example of case study: as an axample... teacher conduct case study of their special student, then the teacher detect the promblem of the student and the teacher try to make her/him student better. The first step that the teacher should do is exploring student life, then connect it with the promblem of the student, after the teacher find out the matter of his/her student with private approach, the teacher can help the student to solve the matter. Its may be call Child study.

The case studies summarize the understanding of what, who, and why the Case study can be used to generate and test hypotheses. "And one of the functions of this case study is the Case study attempt to show you the specific, unique, and detail things that other searches can not suggest.It is unique in this case that the researcher finds out about the object of the case that it specifically investigates so that case studies it can be used to generate and test hypotheses.

HapusCase study is a method that researchers use to research something. It can be human, event, background, and document. I have just read about it. Also, case study is profound. Nah, from that explanation, we take school as an example, school as education institution. A student in a school had been expelled from his school. Because it is profound, the researcher(s) need to know about point of view from all related parties, start from the student, his friends, his parents, his headmaster, and other key figure that can give more information about it. HapusThere are three points about it. The first, enabling researchers to get a feeling for potentially important variables and to describe phenomena in the appropriate contextual setting. We already know that case study is profound because the data of case study can be obtained not only from the case that studied, but also from all those who know and know the case well. So that data or information can be obtained from many sources. VanWynsberghe and Khan (2007) explain that the purpose of a case study study is to give the reader his report on 'it feels to be in and involved in an event', by providing a very detailed contextual analysis of the event. So, the researcher(s) has to be careful to provide representation about a case for readers.
The second is for testing hypotheses or theories. I think u know about it.
The third is for policy analysis. By doing research profoundly, it is hoped that there will be results of suggestions that minimize the case to occur again.

HapusThe differences between the three according to their understanding are:
Survey research is a study that takes samples from one population and uses a questionnaire as a primary data collection tool. In the survey study required a large enough population if the researcher wants results that reflect the real conditions in the field.
Action research is a study that focuses directly on social action and is both qualitative and quantitative. Action research is a way of doing problems at the same time. This action research is a method based on community actions that are often organized on a broad background, such as in hospitals, factories, schools, and so on.
The case study method, which focuses on real phenomena (social phenomena) in society, is examined in a society viewed from a particular problem or case, in an institution, in groups, and in individuals.

Characteristics of Case Study and Experiment:
Variables:
Experiment: In an experiment, there are two variables, one independent variable, and a dependent variable.
Case Study: In a case study, it is no testing the correlation between two variables
Hypothesis:
Experiment: In an experiment, a hypothesis is being tested to proof the correlation between two variables.
Case Study: In a case study it is not so; it only explores a subject in depth.
Manipulation of Variables:
Experiment: An experiment involves manipulating the variables to test the hypothesis.
Case Study: In a case study it is not so, as it is not testing any hypotheses.
Data:
Experiment: An experiment mostly provides quantitative data.
Case Study: A case study provides qualitative data.
Usage:
Experiment: Experiments are used in natural sciences.
