Classroom observation and
research
Clssroom
observation is a quantutative method of measuring classroom behaviors from
direct observations that specifies both the events or behaviors that are to be
observerd and how they are to be recorded. As
langauge classrooms are specifically constituted to bring about learning it is
not unreasonable to collect data about what goes on there a means of
adding to our knowledge of language learning and use.
Methods of classroom observation and research
A
range of methods before focusing some detail on the use of observation
instruments. That
is a formal experiment, stimulated recall, observation scheme and interaction
analysis.
The formal experiment
Formal experiments have been widely
used a means of collecting evidance on language learning and use, they are compatively
rare in classroom research
where the data have been collected in genuine classroom ( genuine its mean
classroom which have been specifically constituted for teaching purposes, not
for the purpose of collecting data fo research). One of the major reasons
for carying out formal experimets is to control those variables which may intervene
between the independent and dependent variables and thus render the results
uniterpretable or, at the very least, make it extremly difficult to guard
againts threats to the validity of the research . such as control is extremely
diffucult to achieve in most classroom settings.
Probably the best-known classroom
studies employing experimental methods are the so called methods comparison
studies, which seek to evaluate the relative claims of different methods by
randomly assigning students two different groups and providing differential
instructionto these groups. At the end of the research period, all the student
are tested to determine which of the two competing methods is the more
effective. However the fact that
language classrooms are complicated place makes life difficult for the
researches, who wants to carry
out a formal experiment to establish a relationship between the dependent variable
of language proficiency and independent variables such as innovaties methods
and matrials. And, the experience of the methods comparison studies of the
sixties researchers to the need for detailed and precise records of what
actually goes on in the classroom underinvestigation.
Stimulated recall
Stimulated recall is a
technique in which the researcher records and transcibes parts of a lesson and
then gets the teacher and where possible the students to comment on what was
happening at the time, that the teaching and learning took place. It is a
particulary useful techinques in collaborative reseacrh because it enables
teacher and students as well as the researcher to present their various
interpretations of what is going on in the classroom, and for these
interpretations to be linked explicitily to the points in the lesson which gave
rise to them. In
other word Stimulated recall elicited teacher’s comments about the options
considered, decisions made and actions taken in the classroom. A lesson was videotaped
and subsequently viewed and commented upon by the teacher.
Observation scheme
In
selecting an observation scheme, it is neccessary to match the scheme to the
purpose of the research. Because our vision will also be influnced by the
instruments we develop, adapt, or adopt to assist us in our observation. While
the use of observation schemes can provide a sharper focus for our data
collection than unstructured observation, it can also serve to blind us to
aspects of interaction and discourse which are not captured by the scheme and
which may be important to our understanding of the classroom or classrooms that
we are investigating. Or in the other
words the aim of the scheme is to enable the obsever to describe as
precisely as possible.
Interaction analysis
Another method for analysing
classroom interaction involves the discursive analysis of classroom talk. Halliday
and hasan, by lemke (1985). Argues that classrooom education is talk; it is the
social use of language to enact reguler activity structures and to share
systems of meaning among teachers and students. Interpreting education as the
use of language in the context of social activity enables the researches to
observe, document, and interpret how teacher and students use language across
all school subjects to build relationships, define roles and so on.

Question:
- What is your opinion about Classroom observation Research?
- Could you explain the purpose of classroom observation and research?
Thank you for the explanation, it’s very helpful. I would like to answer the questions above also give some additional information related to our discussion.
BalasHapusIn my mind, knowing how well the teaching and learning process in the class is not enough by just knowing how well the student know about the materials or how high the students score in evaluating section. Therefore, teachers need another person who qualify enough to observe the whole activity in the classroom, the observer must observing the whole classroom activity before deciding the issue that may appear in teaching and learning process include teachers’ performance and students’ participations, material development, etc. Besides teacher could not judge the issue by her/his own perception.
Classroom observation research is documenting the reality inside the classroom. It refers to observe teaching and learning practice in the classroom by watching, listening and/or recording.
The classroom observation can be in formal or informal observation of teaching while it is taking place in a classroom or other learning environment. It is conducted by fellow teachers, administrators, or instructional specialists, even professional learning communities. The aim of conducting classroom activity may vary depend on who conduct the activity. For example, if the classroom observation conducted by school administrators, it provides that the purpose of this activity to evaluate the teachers performance in the classroom, the feedback then refers to improve the teachers classroom management and instructional skills. Another example, if the classroom observation research is done by the other teachers as observer-in the same grades or same content area, the goal is sharing the new expertise and insight among teachers in a school, it may related to the materials, the instructions, method of teaching, the students need, the tools that suitable for the materials, understanding the problem that occur in presenting the materials, students’ difficulties, etc.
Thank you for answering our group's question. And I do hope you really understand about our explanation.
Hapusvery well, you briefly explain it and i get the point. thank you widya

HapusThanks for your answer and additional , Widya. It is very helpful for me to get the point of this material. Honestly, I did not get many information about classroom observation and research by this this group's explanation, but you attend to give more explanation by simple word plus you add two exaples, therefore I can get the true point of this material more clearly. Thank you
HapusBased on the Social and Behavioral Sciences Journal 2013 written by Masoumeh Zaare from Department of English Language, South Tehran Branch, Islamic Azad University, Tehran, Iran, it gives explanation about the effect of classroom observation on teaching methodology. Under the title “An investigation into the effect of classroom observation on teaching methodology” the observer tells the significance of classroom observation in assessing teaching procedure and to suggest appropriate ways for planning and carrying out the classroom observation in such a way that desirable results can be achieved. The participants were adults and pre-intermediated level in an Iranian Institute. The observer documenting the classroom activity by using a scale which designed as an observation tool to rate an individual instructor’s teaching performance. Began with how class started, use or integration of technology , the teaching methods and whole teachers and student activity. The finding of the research indicated that classroom observation can be a guide for teachers so they can reflect on their own teaching practices, and those who observing can learn from other. Besides, observation can discover how and why certain theories or methods work or do not work in a local context. The benefit that teachers get in this case is deeper understanding of theoretical knowledge and practical options for what, how and to what extent to use that knowledge in their classroom.
BalasHapusIn conclusion, the main purpose of the classroom observation research is its feedback. “The main reason to conduct classroom observations is to generate actionable feedback for improving practice” (Kane, 2012, p.40). The feedback must be meaningful and useful input to ensure the great output either for teachers or students. You can read the pdf written by Megan W. Stuhlman, Bridget K. Hamre, Jason T. 1. After read the passage above, I think that classroom observation research is important part to improve classroom management and instructional technique in teaching. observational classroom like a method of evaluating and recording specific information about what is going on within a classroom. like Widya said above that it is sometime conduct by fellow teachers, administrators, or instructional specialists, even professional learning communities.
Therefore it could be benefit to the observer, and to the teacher who their classed is being observed by someone. why it could be mutual helping each other?
Because, when people observe other classroom, they provide a reflections, and it can influence the way they plan and teach for their own classroom later. Also, they will give some critical and suggestion to the class they observed, and it will be critical to improve they instruction.
Sometimes It will be useful, when we learn from someone else. And it sometime easy to see widely our problem in classroom, by having people observed our class. so we can get an outside perspective.
2.The purpose of the classroom research is
The main purpose of the classroom observation is to allow a teacher to get feedback from an objective, so they could preparing and repair the next instruction for their own classroom based on comments and review from the observer. Second, it give experience to the observer so they could see real situation, and bring it to their own classroom.
That is according to my opinion. A simple explanation. I do hope reader could understand.
Thank you
Thank you arinda.. i like your statement "when people observe other classroom, they provide a reflections, and it can influence the way they plan and teach for their own classroom later. Also, they will give some critical and suggestion to the class they observed, and it will be critical to improve they instruction".
Hapusfrom your statement related to reflections, so what do you think about the teacher who always talk about reflection but in fact, she/he does not make a change or make innovations to their way in teaching? Because, sometimes, i think that, there are many teachers know about reflections but they are unaware about they have to make a good change. I mean, they do not really understand about their student because they just do what are they think need to do, not what are the student need.
thank you.

BalasHapuswould like to answer the question of number one.
After I read the material above, I personally think that classroom observation and research is a method that very useful for the teachers, administors, and probably for the certain communities. Because it can help particularly for teachers to know and evaluate about what he or she has done in the classroom, the major objective is to see, control, evaluate and even generate feedback on teacher’s instructions or action in the calssroom. In this part, it does not need to see how teacher teach students but more than it, example even though teacher had delivered a teaching material in appropriate way and suitable with the rules in cooperative learning, the next step is that teacher has to makes sure that the students do not work by individual instead by working together. Another is from the learning tools, example the teacher uses map or chart in learning process, all students have and could see that tools even they sit in last chair(behind).
It seems like mutual helping among the observers, teachers, and students. Certainly after knew and got new insight/experience, that observer(it can be from fellow teacher) can improve and apply the new method or instruction to his/her own students also. That problems can be found by the observer and of course, she/he can give the result of the observation to improve the instruction or the action of the teacher. Therefore, the result is teacher can design an action, do action, observe, evaluate and get feedback from the observer. Remember the observer does not observe how teacher teach, instead the teacher’s action on improving the process and the result of learning process.

In my opinion, this classroom observation and research is very important to do, especially for a prospective educator because there are many things we should know in the teaching and learning process. It's not only about how we teach, what we teach, but also about everything that engages with the students themselves. As you said before that classroom observation is a method of measuring class behavior from direct observation that determines events or behavior. So we can know that the purpose of classroom observation is to find out things that happen in the classroom, whether it is about the behavior of students and events related to teaching and learning process.
Thank you.
I do agree with your statement Elasari, yeach It is not only about how we teach, what we teach, but also everything that engages with the student themselves. That I understand of your statement that by this method, teacher contributes to help student like looked on student side. Where teacher or educator should apply constructivism theory. Teacher should place their self in student side, and teacher should understand student before judge them. Is it true ? What do you think Elasari ? Are you agree with my opinion about your statement ? Thankyou

BalasHapuswe are from the fifth group would like to answer the question. but before that, let us express our thankfull for all you because this an interesting topic. have you imagine that will be a time we do an observation for our research. oke, move to the first question.
1. What is your opinion about Classroom observation Research?
A classroom observation is a formal or informal observation of teaching while it is taking place in a classroom or other learning environment. Typically conducted by fellow teachers, administrators, or instructional specialists, classroom observations are often used to provide teachers with constructive critical feedback aimed at improving their classroom management and instructional techniques. School administrators also regularly observe teachers as an extension of formal job-performance evaluations.
2. Could you explain the purpose of classroom observation and research?
Classroom observation has many valid and important educational purposes. This section summarizes three important purposes or areas where systematic classroom observation has been widely used:
(1) description of instructional practices;
(2) investigation of instructional inequities for different groups of students;
(3) improvement of teachers' classroom instruction based on feedback from individual classroom or school profiles.

BalasHapusI am SULAEHA from the second group will be ansewer the question number one...
What is your opinion about Classroom observation Research?
My Answer :
In my opinion Classroom observation is the most important action because to know what needs are in want, what to wear, how to make the class feel comfortable both teacher and student, to know attitude / behavior what often appear in class and how to facilitate it by way observation, and most importantly also why it is important to me the class research is so that how to make the material easy to understand both learners or educators so that learners easily absorbed and finally to know how the teacher action whether the method applied to the students is suitable or not so the needs of students and teachers are met.
Thank you!

That is the good material and nice explanation. And you has explain about a range of methods before focusing some detail on the use of observation instruments. That is a formal experiment, stimulated recall, observation scheme and interaction analysis. well, my question is can you briefly describe the differences in the observation methods and classroom research described above?
2. The purpose of Classroom Observation and Research, according to my opinion: when talk about Classroom Observation and Research, it means we cannot separate it from feedback, it was intended to be used as a guide for teachers with which they and their colleagues could reflect about their practices on their own and decide what action to take as Widia said above such as how teacher started the class, gave instructions, using technology or learning tools, whole activities both teachers and students do, etc.
BalasHapusI personally think that the purpose of classroom observation is to increases teachers' control (self-awareness)of their actions and the possibility that they will modify such as method or instructional behavior in the classroom.
In my opinion, The classroom observation is teaching observation that it is taking place in a classroom or other learning environment. And it can be conducted by the teachers or the others. classroom observation is a method that very useful for the teachers or a researcher, because it can help the researcher or teachers to know the processes of education in their classroom in naturalistic setting. The teacher can know the real fact of their classroom. Thus, with the result of observation, teacher can look for the solution to conduct their class. And in my opinion the main aim of this classroom observation is to improve teacher’s classroom instruction based on feedback from the classroom.
BalasHapusthank you
Good answer fatimah. But, can you give me an example the effect of classroom observation on students?
HapusThank you for your answer..
HapusAnd for sasdilah's question, I think your question is already explained by fatimah. As fatimah said that the aim of classroom observation is to improve teacher's classroom instruction. It means that student will get the effect also because the teachers already know the way to improve their instrucional techinque and also their classroom management. Therefor, student will get the good treatment by the teachers.

Thank you for your question.
HapusAs I read in an article explain that the superiority of classroom observation are permit researchers to study the processes of education in naturalistic settings, provide more detailed and precise evidence than other data sources and stimulate change and verify that the change occurred.

I will give a simple answer of the first question. What is your opinion about classroom observation research?
According to me, classroom observation research is a research that done in the classroom. Classroom research is very important to do especially for a teacher. By doing a classroom observation research, a teacher know or get information about what students need within a learning process. Teacher can improve the technique or method that used in learning proces,so teacher not only give some materials or make students understand it, but teacher also know how to make a students feel comfortable in teaching and learning process.
I do hope you understand my answer. Thank you

I'm from the first group,
Answer 1 and 2 ,
1, According of the article that have I read, classroom observation research is an important method for teacher to increase their technical learning. But, in this method, teacher did not should focus on one way, but teacher should did several thing in the class, such as teacher should observe and evaluate students by give an instument or question for students. By the instrument /quesionare/ question, indirectly teacher observe student before open the class. In other hand, teacher as facilitator who help student get knowledge and science.
2, The purpose of the research is to find data from student, because by using this method, we can help student in their observation learning. In other hand, we can give stimulus for student, so that they will give back positive respons of our observation about their knowledge or science in the class.

I just want to answer that Questions, I hope My answer Can give you a new information.
1. What is your opinion about Classroom observation Research ?
=Answer : Classroom observation was also defined as a process by which the observer sits in on one or more classroom sessions, records the instructor's teaching practices and student actions, and then meets with the instructor to discuss the observations. Therefore, it is a collaborative process. Both the teacher being observed and the observer having significant roles before, during, and after the observation process. Collaborating at each phase of the process can help place both participants at ease so that each benefits from the experience.
2. Could you explain the purpose of classroom observation and research ?
=Answer : The main purpose behind the classroom observation is to allow a teacher to get feedback from an objective, experienced observer and to involve in context-specific discussions about teaching with an adviser. Moreover, data will be collected on what the teacher is doing what they should probably be doing; classroom learning environment will be assessed and reported to the stakeholders. Additionally, the teacher's capability to demonstrate various teaching methods is also observed (Wragg, 1999).
Classroom observation has been used for long time to evaluate the quality of teaching provided and the consistency between the curriculum plan and the actual delivery of the material by teachers. Wragg (1999) stated that "the purpose of looking at implementation is to see whether there is a mismatch between intention and strategies". Classroom observation has constantly been seen as an effortful task from the side of the teachers. Negative attitudes have been expressed from several teachers venting their disappointment about the process by which observation has been implemented.
Assalamu Alaikum
BalasHapusI'm Masira Nur as the member of the third group will anwer the first question.
1. What is your opinion about Classroom observation Research?
Answer : As we as know that observation as a primary research method, observation can be conducted on nearly any subject matter, and the kinds of observation you will do depend on our research question. Based on the argument of Dana Lynn Driscoll’s PDF “You might be observe traffic or parking patterns on campus to get a sense of what improvements could be made. You might be observe clouds, plants, or other natural phenomena”. If you choose to observe people, you will have several additional considerations including the manner in which you will observe them and gain their consent. If you are observing people, you can choose between two common ways to observe: participant observation and unobtrusive observation. Participant observation is a common method within ethnographic research in sociology and anthropology. In this kind of observation, a researcher may interact with participants and become part of their community. Margaret Mead, a famous anthropologist, spent extended periods of time living in, and interacting with, communities that she studied. Conversely, in unobtrusive observation, you do not interact with participants but rather simply record their behavior. So, in short in my opinion exactly classroom observation is pay attention accurately, write the phenomenon that emerge, and consider the relation between each aspect in that phenomenon.
